This is a good summary:

http://blog.derbyjs.com/2012/04/...
The basics:
ORM: Meteor is designed to make direct read/writes to MongoDB, Derby uses PubSub and is designed to work with any DB.
Focus: Meteor is focused on allowing users to create modern webapps quickly. Derby is focused on allowing users to create fast-loading realtime webapps. Derby is a bit more flexible and extensible, while Meteor is easier and more "magical."
Both are welcome and necessary.
